SUMMARY:Editing our own and other people’s writing\, with Elly Wade
DESCRIPTION:Elly writes:   ‘Editing can be a difficult task with lots of pitfalls. You can get stuck in a loop of trying to “perfect” your writing at the cost of generating new material\, or never think about editing once and wind up with an overwhelmingly long draft that you don’t know how to tame. Some people hate the idea of anyone making changes to their work\, others are relieved to hand it over. The role of writer and editor can seem highly discrete\, almost like opposites — the writer creates and the editor cuts\, writing is instinctive and editing is clinical. Our session will include some exercises that hopefully blur these boundaries and demonstrate that editing can also be additive\, playful\, and collaborative.  Weather permitting\, one will involve wandering around the grounds of Roots and Shoots in search of inspiration. \n\n\n\n\nIf you can\, please bring along some draft text that you’d be prepared to share with a partner. \n\n\n\nI will also talk about my own experiences of editing and writing\, and there will be lots of room for questions and discussion.’ \n\n\n\n\nAbout Elly: Elly Wade (they/them) is a proofreader and editor who has collaborated with playwrights\, screenwriters\, standup comedians\, and novelists. They have vocational training in theatre & performance and a Creative and Professional Writing BA from the London College of Contemporary Music (weird but true!). efvwade@gmail.com \n\n\n\n\nNext 2024 AWG dates (All Fridays\, 1.30-4.30 pm\, in person\, at Roots and Shoots). \n\n\n\n4 October – open to offers \n\n\n\n6 December – Private Passions\, and celebration of our Writing Year. \n\n\n\n Cost:  £10 towards the cost of room and equipment hire.  To be collected in cash on the door. \n\n\n\nRSVP: Please indicate your intentions by Wednesday 24 July (earlier if possible). I’ll send any final arrangements for our AWG meeting a day or so before we meet. All welcome\, and please feel free to spread the word. \n\n\n\nPlease don’t hesitate to get in touch if there’s anything you’d like to ask or offer regarding the work of the AMED Writers’ Group. Meantime\, best wishes for your writing interests.  Bob bob@amed.org.uk

SUMMARY:What writing means to me? An AMED Writers’ Group open session (in-person)
DESCRIPTION:Your Invitation: Please join us for our inaugural AMED Writers’ Group (AWG) session of 2024.  (Our February session had to be postponed because of rail strikes). Here\, we can share our writing challenges\, achievements and interests in anticipation of our projects and enthusiasms for the year ahead. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nOur process: To ring in the changes\, in this session\, we’ll experiment with a slightly different  format. Please come ready to share a favourite quote or other illustration from or about writing. \n\n\n\nThis would  resonate with how we are each feeling about our relationship with writing. It could be something that you or somebody else has written\, said or otherwise created. If you can\, please bring an artefact\, reflection or a version printed on a sheet of A4 paper\, so that we can display it on the wall or table.  Everyone will have a chance to introduce their offering\, and we’ll see how the discussion develops from there. Towards the end of our time together on 5 April\, we’ll look at how the rest of the 2024 AWG programme is shaping up. \n\n\n\nThis typically open and informal gathering is a wonderful opportunity to meet old and new friends who are interested in writing\, reading\, listening\, conversations\, diversity\, solidarity and conviviality in any form.  Everyone is welcome\, so please feel free to spread the word. \n\n\n\nCost:  £10\, towards the cost of room and equipment hire.  To be collected in cash on the door. \n\n\n\nRSVP: Please indicate your intentions by Friday 15 March (earlier if possible). I’ll send any final arrangements for our AWG meeting a day or so before we meet. \n\n\n\nMeantime\, very best wishes for your writing interests. Bob bob@amed.org.uk

SUMMARY:Reune\, a curated evening of live dance and short films.
DESCRIPTION:AWG Member Steve Dilworth has sent us this invitation. He writes: \n\n\n\nI have just learned that the film that I made with Ellie is going to be shown at Sadler’s Wells on 2 March as part of Reune\, a curated evening of live dance and short films. \n\n\n\nWhat Lies Beyond: \n\n\n\nA short film (11 minutes) that highlights a different way of expressing grief – though moving the body and prioritising sounds over words.  Sensitive narration and unobtrusive music provide the backdrop. \n\n\n\nIf you are in London it would be good to see you there.  If you know anyone closer to the area who might be interested\, please do pass on this link.’

SUMMARY:Private Passions\, and Highlights of Your 2023 Writing Year\, with Bob MacKenzie and Writing Friends (in-person)
DESCRIPTION:Your Invitation: \n\n\n\nJanus\, ancient god of gates\, doors and beginnings. \n\n\n\nPlease join us for our annual f2f review and celebration of your writing year.  Here\, we can share our writing challenges\, achievements and interests arising from yet another strange year of permacrisis.  We can also begin to anticipate our respective writing projects and enthusiasms for 2024. \n\n\n\nOur process:  Some 12 -14 of us can meet safely in person at Roots and Shoots\, where mince pies will be served\, and pub conversations afterwards are also an option. \n\n\n\nAs a community of writing (and reading) practice\, our review includes (optionally) sharing your favourite ‘Word of the Year’ (e.g. ‘goblin mode’\, from OUP)[1]\, or from your own list) that for you epitomises a significant or shifting ethos\, mood\, or development in 2023.  In any case\, please bring along some favourite writing (your own or someone else’s) from 2023 to share in pairs or small groups in a ‘Private Passions’ session.  You might bring an artefact\, a recording\, an account of an experience – anything!  We’ll also be looking forward to our 2024 writing year.  As a seasonal gift\, I’m also attaching a short quiz which might help you to take stock\, whether or not you are able to join us on 1 December. \n\n\n\nI’ll also be reporting on ideas and suggestions that we’ve received for AWG sessions\, and inviting your comments and suggestions. \n\n\n\nCost:  £10\, whatever participation medium you choose. This money will go towards the cost of room and equipment hire. To be collected in cash on the door. \n\n\n\nRSVP: Please indicate your intentions by Friday 17 November (earlier if possible). I’ll send any final arrangements for our AWG meeting a day or so beforehand. Please do tell me if you or someone you know might be interested in offering to facilitate a session in 2024. \n\n\n\nSeasonal greetings. Bob bob@amed.org.uk \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n[1] OUP defines goblin mode as “a type of behavior which is unapologetically self-indulgent\, lazy\, slovenly\, or greedy.” So\, what does that look like? Goblin mode can look wildly different for everyone\, but it usually involves discarding social norms and expectations for unruly behavior.

SUMMARY:Having a book in mind – storying other people’s lives\, with Raj Singh
DESCRIPTION:Your Invitation: Are you interested in writing about the stories of other people? If so\, you are welcome to join us for another creative and participative AWG session\, facilitated by Raj. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRaj writes: I invite you to bring your curiosity to share ideas about story telling in writing. In our conversations we will engage in  the evolving stories of individuals in relationships with others. I take an anthropological stance in exploring the lived lives and experiences of individuals. I will share some thoughts and ideas about what brings me to writing\, and explore the challenges involved in writing about people who have epilepsy and other conditions. Writers come to write about people in a web of relationships that at times are intertwined with life events. I aim to explore these relationships through the experiences of children and young people who have neurological conditions and learning disabilities. Such issues should resonate with you if you are thinking about such writing in other contexts as well. \n\n\n\nAbout Raj: I am a Sikh and a psychologist\, and that makes writing a challenge for me\, as I want to offer brief insights from that perspective of psychological ideas regarding the experiences of growing up for the individuals with particular needs\, At the same time\, I would like a address the wider relevance and  universality of these ideas. I have certain notions and beliefs about the mind and its life\, both internal and external\, as people experience events in the world. In writing from my professional perspective\,  I am also aware that I am creating stories about the experiences of other people who lack the means to do this for themselves. \n\n\n\nProcess: Please be curious and ask questions about such ideas. In the spirit of collegiate learning and collaboration I also hope that the workshop will evoke for you certain resonances with your own writing interests and spur your creative activities. Do bring writing materials (a notebook and a pen would be sufficient) to the workshop. I will provide A4 sheets for paired exercises to develop ideas.  \n\n\n\nCost:  £10\, to be collected in cash on the door.  Proceeds will  help us cover the cost of room and equipment hire. \n\n\n\nHow to reserve your place:  If you would like to participate in this co-inquiry\, please let Bob know by 3 October (earlier if possible). We’ll send you joining details nearer the time. \n\n\n\nDo you have any suggestions for future AWG sessions?  If so\, please get in touch\, and we can discuss possibilities. \n\n\n\nKind regards.  Bob (MacKenzie)\, E: bob@amed.org.uk

SUMMARY:From Role to Soul: The inner work of age: exploring our Inner Ageist and Eldering with Heather Day*
DESCRIPTION:*Please note: You don’t need to have attended Part 1 to participate fully in this session. Everyone is welcome! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHeather writes:  I have been invited to lead the AMED Writers’ Group (AWG) in a further enquiry into the ‘Inner Work of Age.’ Considering how we move from ‘Role to Soul\,’ I take Connie Zweig’s book as my starting point\, and I feel inspired to bring this theme in a spirit of exploration and discovery. \n\n\n\nProcess: I will offer a series of guided writing exercises\, discussion and reflection. Together\, we will explore themes related to the movement from the roles we have played in our lives (and may still play) towards our soul\, and what that might mean for each of us. \n\n\n\nIn Part 1\, we considered our ‘lived and unlived’ lives and made a map of the journey. In Part 2\, we will explore our ‘inner ageist’ – the shadow character within – and also consider aspects of the collective shadow. Then we will take the theme of becoming an Elder (or Eldering) and explore what this could mean. I will introduce the three qualities of awareness (from Connie’s book) as a possible lens or resource. My intention for the writing session is to create a space where we can gain fresh insights and/or a deeper understanding into ways to re-define and re-orientate ourselves as we age. \n\n\n\nWhat to bring: Please bring your preferred writing resources\, coloured pens and plain paper (if you want to explore with drawing alongside writing) and – above all – yourself. \n\n\n\nAbout Heather: The theme of navigating life and career transitions deeply interests me as a coach. I support my clients with identifying where they are on the transition cycle\, and help them explore what will enable them to move to the next phase. www.heatherdaycoaching.com. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCost:  £10 \,to be collected in cash on the door.  Proceeds will  help us cover the cost of room and equipment hire. \n\n\n\nHow to reserve your place:  If you would like to participate in this co-inquiry\, please let Bob know by 9 August (earlier if possible). We’ll send you joining details nearer the time. \n\n\n\nDo you have any suggestions for future AWG sessions?  If so\, please get in touch\, and we can discuss possibilities. \n\n\n\nKind regards.  Bob (MacKenzie)\, E: bob@amed.org.uk \n\n\n\nAMED-Session-Heather-Day-25th-AugDownload

SUMMARY:Journalling through the Labyrinth: an approach  for the 21st century?\, another AMED Writers’ Group gathering\, with John Sweet
DESCRIPTION:Your invitation:  You are welcome to join us for another innovative – potentially hybrid – AMED Writers’ Group session\, which John will facilitate.  If at all possible\, we would like you to join us in person\, although we are also making arrangements for some people to beam in via ZOOM. \n\n\n\nJohn writes:  I should like to share my latest ideas about the Journalling process\, inspired by the structure of a Labyrinth\, and to give you an opportunity to try it out too!  I have been working on this for a number of years and a finished product to offer the Journalling public is getting closer.  I would very much appreciate your feedback\, especially on what I call the ‘WriteListening’ process.  You will also have the opportunity to consider how this approach might resonate with your own particular context. \n\n\n\n‘WriteListening’ comes in the form of coaching virtually\, to enable participants to hold their own individual Journal session with audio prompts available to them on demand.  I will introduce a 20 – 30 minute writing exercise\, then we can reflect on its merits.   \n\n\n\nWhat to bring:  If you are planning to attend in person at Roots and Shoots (which I hope you will 😊)\, please bring along if you can a smartphone\, iPad or computer with an internet connection and headphones\, or ear buds.  We will set up any Zoom participants in advance.  Either way\, there will be some writing to do\, but this can be done either with pencil and paper\, or digitally.  If you cannot bring any tech\, you are most welcome to look-on aghast or in wonder\, and still write some interesting ruminations. \n\n\n\nAbout John:  ‘It must be nearly 10 years since I was last at Roots and Shoots\, leading a session on Progoff and Journalling. It will be very much a privilege and pleasure to be there again with the Writers’ Group on 17th February’.  johnfrsweet@gmail.com \n\n\n\nHow to reserve your place:  Please reply to Bob @ bob@amed.org.uk by Monday 6 February (earlier if possible)\, indicating whether you’d prefer to join us in person or via Zoom.  In order to contribute towards the cost of venue hire\, there will be a participation fee of £10 per person.  Once you have registered your interest\, we’ll send you more details and joining instructions nearer the time.  Meantime\, please don’t hesitate to contact John or Bob if you’d like any more information. \n\n\n\nWe’re looking forward to engaging with you on this creatively experimental session. \n\n\n\nBest wishes.   Bob bob@amed.org.uk \, AMED Writers’ Group Coordinator. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJohn Sweet

SUMMARY:AWG - annual 'Private Passions' session via Zoom\, with Shelagh Doonan and writing friends
DESCRIPTION:Your invitation: In keeping with the traditions of our AMED Writers’ Group (AWG)*\, we warmly invite you to join our free annual end-of-year gathering “Private Passions”.  We gather via Zoom on Friday 16 December at 1.30 pm UK .  Please bring along a short piece of writing (your own or by someone else) to share – some writing that has meant something to you this year; writing that perhaps you have found insightful\, or moving\, surprising\, soothing or provocative\, validating or challenging. \n\n\n\nThrough sharing\, discussion and writing\, we will explore what matters to us\, and ways in which writing enriches our lives. \n\n\n\nWe will also spend some time at the end of the workshop identifying some possible themes and offerings for our writing group for 2023. \n\n\n\nAhead of the workshop\, you may also like to think what might be your “word of the year” – a word that encapsulates 2022 for you. \n\n\n\nAbout Shelagh:  I am a long-standing member of the AMED Writers’ Group. Having worked for over 30 years in learning and development in the voluntary and public sectors\, I now memoir) with art/images (especially collage) work as a volunteer coach with the adult literacy charity Read Easy. I enjoy combining writing (poetry).  E:   shelaghdoonan2010@btinternet.com \n\n\n\nWe’d welcome your offers to facilitate or suggest a future AWG session\, and also your suggestions about other potential facilitators and themes that we might consider. So please do get in touch. Please feel free to contact me with your suggestions\, using the note that I’m attaching here. \n\n\n\nBest wishes.  Bob bob@amed.org.uk \n\n\n\nAWG Convenor

SUMMARY:AWG - Moving into Winter with Writing
DESCRIPTION:Your invitation:  You are welcome to join Tanya\, Bob and the AMED community for a free afternoon writing session.  This is our first AMED Writers’ Group (AWG) workshop since AMED closed formally as an educational charity\, though you will notice no change whatsoever in our ethos of generous mutual support for and interest in everyone’s respective writing interests. \n\n\n\nOur process:  Through a series of guided writing exercises\, discussion and quiet reflection we’ll explore our relationship with Winter; what it means to us\, our memories\, associations and expectations.  We’ll look at what it might mean to each of us to invite a sense of creativity and wellbeing into our lives as we move into the darker months. \n\n\n\nWhat to bring: Your preferred writing resources\, and yourself! \n\n\n\nTanya Fairtlough is a yoga and breath work teacher\, wellbeing facilitator\, (self-reflective and creative) writer and part time artist. She enjoys integrating writing into both her own personal routine and in to the wellbeing sessions she runs with other people. She’s currently writing a longer piece of fiction (maybe a novel! maybe not….. We’ll see).
