Editing our own and other people’s writing, with Elly Wade

August 2, 2024 @ 1:30 pm 4:30 pm BST

Elly writes:   ‘Editing can be a difficult task with lots of pitfalls. You can get stuck in a loop of trying to “perfect” your writing at the cost of generating new material, or never think about editing once and wind up with an overwhelmingly long draft that you don’t know how to tame. Some people hate the idea of anyone making changes to their work, others are relieved to hand it over. The role of writer and editor can seem highly discrete, almost like opposites — the writer creates and the editor cuts, writing is instinctive and editing is clinical. Our session will include some exercises that hopefully blur these boundaries and demonstrate that editing can also be additive, playful, and collaborative.  Weather permitting, one will involve wandering around the grounds of Roots and Shoots in search of inspiration.

If you can, please bring along some draft text that you’d be prepared to share with a partner.

I will also talk about my own experiences of editing and writing, and there will be lots of room for questions and discussion.’

About Elly: Elly Wade (they/them) is a proofreader and editor who has collaborated with playwrights, screenwriters, standup comedians, and novelists. They have vocational training in theatre & performance and a Creative and Professional Writing BA from the London College of Contemporary Music (weird but true!). efvwade@gmail.com
